Living in Cal Young: A Renter’s Guide to One of Eugene’s Most Livable Neighborhoods

Cal Young sits at the north end of Eugene, tucked between the Willakenzie neighborhood to the east and Sheldon to the north. It’s one of the quieter, more residential parts of the city — tree-lined streets, walkable pockets, and easy access to almost everywhere in Eugene without the density of downtown. If you’re considering an apartment in Cal Young, here’s a renter’s-eye view of what makes the neighborhood work.

The character of Cal Young

Cal Young is a residential neighborhood first. Most of the housing stock is single-family homes and mid-sized apartment buildings, laid out on a grid of streets that make the area easy to navigate and comfortable to walk. The neighborhood park (Cal Young Park) anchors the area, with sports fields, playgrounds, and open green space that gets regular use.

The pace is calm without being sleepy. You’ll see runners and dog walkers year-round, but you’re also just a short drive or bus ride from downtown Eugene when you want more activity.

Getting around

Cal Young is well-positioned for renters who don’t want to be dependent on a highway commute. Downtown Eugene is a 10-minute drive south. The University of Oregon campus is about 15 minutes. I-105 gives quick access to Springfield and the Coburg Road commercial corridor to the east.

Lane Transit District (LTD) buses serve the area, with routes connecting Cal Young to downtown, the university, and the Gateway/Springfield area. It’s not as bus-heavy as downtown corridors, but frequent enough for regular commuting.

The neighborhood is also bikeable. Eugene’s bike infrastructure is genuinely strong, and Cal Young’s flat terrain makes it easy to ride to most places you’d want to go on a regular basis.

Everyday essentials

Coburg Road runs along the eastern edge of Cal Young and covers most day-to-day needs: grocery stores (Trader Joe’s and WinCo are both close), a Fred Meyer for one-stop shopping, restaurants, coffee, banking, and services. You rarely need to leave the area for routine errands.

For coffee, Coburg Road has multiple local options in addition to the national chains. Eugene’s coffee culture punches above the city’s size, and Cal Young benefits from that without being at the center of it.

Parks and outdoor access

Cal Young Park is the neighborhood’s central green space, but the real outdoor bonus is what’s just beyond the neighborhood. Alton Baker Park and the Ruth Bascom Riverbank Trail System run along the Willamette River just south, giving you 12+ miles of continuous multi-use path along the water. It’s one of the best in-city trail systems in Oregon.

For weekends, the McKenzie River corridor and the Cascades are close enough for regular day trips. The Oregon coast is about an hour west. Hiking, cycling, and running are woven into daily life for most Eugene renters.

What Cal Young is best for

Cal Young tends to work best for renters who value a quiet residential neighborhood with easy access to more of the city. Young professionals commuting to downtown or the university. Families who want space and good access to parks. Remote workers who want walkable coffee options and calm streets. Anyone who wants to be close to Eugene’s energy without being in the middle of it.
